Program Enhancements: Current & Future

Our Program Enhancements are designed to enrich the learning experience by connecting learning to “the real world”, facilitating relationships between people in different stages of their lives and careers, and bridging the school with the wider community.

Orientation/Teambuilding

Every semester will begin with a CSG Orientation and Teambuilding session.  This is a special time for students and staff to get to know one another and begin to form the bond as a community.  After introductions, tours of the campus and facilities and overview of Community Expectations, the group will spend two days immersed in a teambuilding retreat to kick of the semester.

The Guest Lecturer Program
The Guest Lecturer Program consists of a series of presentations by distinguished leaders in a variety of fields, with the majority focused on marine science. This program is designed to inspire students, expose them to a variety of career and vocational opportunities, and help them as they grapple with the demands of their own research projects.

Service Week

Each semester students take a rest from academics and participate in a week-long service-learning adventure, either in Freeport or in another location.  Students and staff work together to make a difference on a variety of environmental or social causes.  Projects will vary from semester to semester, and may involve some travel, but will all involve goals including service, education, adventure, leadership, and reflection.

Leadership Experience

Each semester, CSG offers an extended adventure-based Leadership Experience.  Planned toward the end of the semester, this event is an opportunity for students to put their leadership skills to the test.  Under the guidance of our experienced teachers, students take responsibility for goal setting, route planning and navigation, camp and meal preparation, health and safety, and managing group dynamics.  Potential trip options include sea kayaking, wilderness canoeing, snowshoe touring, ocean sailing, or mountain backpacking.

The Home Again Program

The Home Again program is designed to help girls who have completed a CSG semester to reconnect with their home community on a variety of levels: smoothing their transition back to their local school, sharing their learning and growth, supporting them in their ongoing development as young women, and establishing their future connection with CSG as alumnae of the CSG semester program.

The Mentoring Program (future offering)
The Mentoring Program at Coastal Studies for Girls is an opportunity for our students to connect with college women who are majoring in and anticipating careers in STEM: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These young women, just a few years older than our students, have valuable information and insights to share about their experience in higher education, and will provide students with vibrant role models.

Mentors must be enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution in order to participate. Potential institutions include (but are not limited to) University of New England, Colby College, Bates College, Bowdoin College, Lesley University, University of Southern Maine, Maine Maritime Academy, University of New Hampshire, College Of the Atlantic, and the University of Maine at Orono, Machias or Presque Isle.

The Scholar in Residence Program (future offering)
Each semester, Coastal Studies for Girls will host a resident scholar who will spend three days at a time on the CSG campus, sharing their expertise in a variety of marine-related disciplines. While at CSG, each resident scholar will hold two seminars for students and give one lecture open to the public at the Coastal Studies for Girls campus or at other nearby institutions.

Resident Scholars will complement our marine research program by offering expert advice and experience “from the field”, while simultaneously providing a practical perspective on the challenges of managing ocean resources to meet both human and ecosystem needs. In addition to exposing our students to highly motivated and qualified professionals and potential career opportunities, this program will hold up Scholars in Residence as individuals who model a respect and love for the sea, a desire to protect marine resources and an ability to communicate pressing environmental issues to society as a whole.
