Satellite ImageCoastal Studies for Girls is located at Wolfe's Neck Farm in Freeport , Maine . Both organizations are excited to explore a wonderful parallel in our educational, recreational and environmental missions.

Wolfe's Neck Farm (WNF) is also a non-profit organization, centered around sustainable agriculture, education, stewardship, and the preservation of open spaces. They have a beautiful campus, with Casco Bay on one side, the Haraseeket River on the other, and Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park just down the road. The community of CSG will be nestled among golden fields and majestic white pines on the farm property.

The history of the farm is fascinating in itself! In 1946, LMC Smith and his wife Eleanor Houston Smith purchased what is now Wolfe's Neck Farm.

This saltwater farm was the perfect place for the Smiths to begin their organic farming operation as proof of their belief in the useful preservation and protection of open places. They began their operation in 1959 with 17 Black Angus Cows. The herd is much larger today, with a mix of Black Angus, Gelbvieh and Polled Herefords.

In addition to creating WNF, the Smiths helped create Popham Beach State Park and Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park . The Smiths also donated Mast Landing Bird Sanctuary to the Maine Audubon Society and the Percy-Small Shipyard to the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath .

LMC Smith died in 1975. In 1984, Eleanor gave the farm to the University of Southern Maine . Wolfe's Neck Farm was given back to the Wolfe's Neck Farm Foundation in 1997, to serve as a community resource. USM still operates the Stone House Retreat Center at the end of Wolfe's Neck Road , as well as The Action Learning Center Ropes Course nearby.

Wolfe's Neck Farm's Mission is:

  • To demonstrate innovative practices and marketing strategies in alternative/organic agriculture that can help preserve and revitalize Maine farming;
  • To maintain in perpetuity the rare and endangered natural, historical, ecological and agricultural resources of Wolfe's Neck Farm; and,
  • To work in partnership with the Town of Freeport and local and Maine organizations to use these resources for purposes of education, recreation and historical and other research, thus enriching the lives of the people of Maine and those living in the Freeport area.
