January 2010

Dear friends,

Preparations are in full swing for the arrival of our very first class of young women on February 14th. As we finalize curriculum details and put the finishing touches on our farmhousefarmhouse living and learning center, we extend our gratitude to you. Your support has allowed Coastal Studies for Girls to get this far, and now we are literally preparing to open the doors to our pioneers. Our class numbers 12 now and ranges from communities as diverse as Queens, Boston, and Los Angeles, while others are from public, private or homeschools in rural Maine, Vermont, and Connecticut.

Thanks for joining us on this exciting journey.

Working Together for Women and Girls

We're proud to be partnering with the Maine Women's Fund and the National Girls Collaborative Project on the first Girls Grantmaking Program in Maine. Girls in grades 8-12, including the pioneer class of Coastal Studies for Girls, are invited to participate and will decide how to allocate $25,000 from the National Girls Collaborative Project. Grants of $1,000 each will be made to projects that help get young women interested and active in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) jobs and hobbies. This is a great opportunity to involve girls in charity, philanthropy, and grantmaking.

mary and laurenMany thanks to all of our donors and friends who supported us in 2009.

We particularly offer our appreciation to the Davis Family Foundation, The Robert and Dorothy Goldberg Charitable Foundation, and the Leon Lowenstein Foundation for their recent gifts this fall.

We also thank artist Lauren Shaw for the extraordinary use of her Maine Women: Living on the Land photography exhibition that ran November 13 - December 18. Many thanks to Wright-Ryan Construction and Van Dam Architects for underwriting the exhibit.

packaging girlhood jacketCoastal Studies for Girls National Council member Lyn Mikel Brown continues to challenge and critique the media's influence on children and youth. Packaging Girlhood (2007), by Sharon Lamb and Lyn Mikel Brown, helps parents recognize media attempts to claim them.

Read one of Lynn's latest articles, "Taming the Media Stereotypes that Make Kids Aggressive," which is featured in the December 2009/January 2010 edition of the PTA online magazine.

Lynn will be meeting with CSG faculty, staff and board members to guide them in incorporating her research and advice on taming these negative sterotypes.
