Many folks around the world have been watching the development of NASA's shuttle Discovery since it blasted off October 23rd . This especially includes Mainers and everyone at Coastal Studies for Girls, a Freeport-based science and leadership school>, because Mission Commander Colonel Pamela Melroy is carrying a banner bearing the CSG logo.

Several months ago, upon learning of the new school's progress, Colonel Melroy wanted to show her support of CSG's mission to help girls reach leadership positions, especially in the sciences. Colonel Melroy, who has degrees in physics and astronomy as well as Earth and planetary sciences, suggested that the school provide her with an item suitable for space travel. The 14” x 8” lightweight banner, created by Puelle Design of Yarmouth , was soon dispatched.

Colonel Melroy will return to Earth after a 14-day mission to the International Space Station. She then intends to autograph the banner and return it to the team at Coastal Studies for Girls. For a school purposefully designed to raise the aspirations of girls, this event has special significance: “In terms of goal-setting and achievement, Colonel Melroy is exactly the kind of role model we intend to hold up for our students. We are very grateful to her for this grand gesture of support, commented Portland resident and CSG Board Chair Edith Aronson.
