College of the Atlantic |
Statement of Connection to CSG |
"College of the Atlantic enthusiastically supports the mission of
Coastal Studies for Girls. A partnership between COA and CSG is a very
natural one. Marine sciences have always been part of the curriculum at
College of the Atlantic, and many of our students study marine
environments and the creatures that live there, from worms to seabirds
to whales. College of the Atlantic embraces an educational approach in
which fieldwork and real-world application is underlain by classroom
work, equipping students with the information and experiences they need
to understand and improve the relationships between people and their
environment. College of the Atlantic is committed to experiential
education and will contribute to and facilitate a meaningful, rigorous,
hands-on approach to science at Coastal Studies for Girls." |
Mission Statement |
| College of the Atlantic enriches the liberal arts tradition through a
distinctive educational philosophy: human ecology. A human ecological
perspective integrates knowledge from all academic disciplines and from
personal experience to investigate, and ultimately improve, the
relationships between human beings and our social and natural communities. The human ecological perspective guides all aspects of
education, research, activism, and interactions among the College's
students, faculty, staff, and trustees. The College of the Atlantic
community encourages, prepares, and expects students to gain the
expertise, breadth, values, and practical experience necessary to
achieve individual fulfillment and to help solve problems that challenge
communities everywhere.

The Lobster Conservancy |
Program Summary |
The Lobster Conservancy (TLC) works with fishermen and volunteers throughout the Gulf of Maine region to sustain a thriving lobster fishery through science and community. Our approach to scientific research and public education is to actively involve stakeholders in the process of doing science, and to disseminate the knowledge obtained from such research back to stakeholders, as well as fisheries managers and scientists. We study the life of the lobsters from "egg to plate" by working with citizens from "kindergarten to post-retirement". This approach fosters a stewardship ethic by (1) adding to the knowledge base required to understand how to protect the lobster resource, (2) sharing information with policy makers and stakeholders, and (3) creating a sense of community around a resource. TLC's base of operations is located in the center of a small fishing village along mid-coast Maine.

World Ocean School |
The World Ocean School is an internationally focused nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing challenging educational programs for youth by: fostering an appreciation for, and obligation to, community and relationships; developing a deep commitment to ethical values; and cultivating an expanded world view.
The platform for World Ocean School is the historic schooner Roseway, 137' in sparred length, was designed as a fishing yacht by John James and built in 1925 in his family's shipyard in Essex , Massachusetts . Father and son worked side by side on the Roseway, carrying on a long New England tradition of wooden shipbuilding.
In 1941, the Roseway was purchased by the Boston Pilots Association where she served for 32 years. During World War II she became a Coast Guard Reserve Vessel and at the end of the war was presented with a bronze plaque in honor of the Roseway's exemplary wartime service. She was the last pilot schooner in the United States when she was reluctantly retired in 1973, to be replaced by smaller steel powerboats. In 1973, the Roseway began her transformation to a Windjammer which became her trade until 2000.
In September 2002, she was donated to the World Ocean School to be used as a platform for the school's programs where she will carry out the next segment of her life. Today, after 78 years of service, she is one of only six original Grand Banks schooners built in Essex, and one of only three still on the water today. She has been designated a registered U.S. National Historic Landmark.
Coastal Studies for Girls students will have the opportunity to spend a week living and sailing aboard the Roseway where they will learn seamanship, navigation and maritime history while meeting the challenges of crewing a schooner along the spectacular Maine Coast .
