Our increasingly global society makes language and cultural understanding essential. The World Language curriculum prepares students to live in this diverse society with appreciation diverse cultures and ability to converse in a second language.
The multi-level French and Spanish courses are designed to meet the needs of individual students while adhering to the guidelines of both the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Maine State Learning Results. Students will work on gaining an understanding of basic grammar and vocabulary, but also move beyond these topics and look towards achieving fluency. Students will practice the four aspects of language learning- reading, writing, listening, and speaking, in an improvisational and immediate manner which reflects the way language in real life demands us to use those skills. Utilizing the place-based learning curriculum of CSG, this curriculum will have an explicit focus on gaining an understanding of the Spanish and French speaking worlds starting with geography, and dialect and broadening to exploration of how language impacts people and culture.
